Herbal Garden
The S.N.Institute of Ayurvedic Studies and Research , Puthur,Kollam, is a sprawling campus spread over an area of 33 acres.Since the campus is situated on the banks of the Kallada river and also because some area of it is surrounded by paddy fields,it has a diverse distribution of medicinal plants.Besides this advantage, the campus has its own herbal garden spread over an area of one acre.It has about 465 different species of medicinal plants including their different varieties,most of which are kept as potted plants while the rest have been planted at ground level.
Recently,the State Medicinal Plant Board has given its approval for further developing our herbal garden into a District Medicinal Plant Demonstration Garden representing the Kollam district of Kerala.Other than an impressive collection of medicinal plants used in Ayurveda, the herbal garden also has a number of plants used in different parts of Kerala as folklore medicine; like Arogyapacha (Trichopus zeylanicus), Ellootti (Pterospermum rubiginosum) etc.It also has some exotic plants like Ruellia brittoniana,Ulophia,Silver fir and Sansiveria sps.A list of some important medicinal plants maintained in our herbal garden is given below.
